I heard of the band 30 Seconds to Mars back in 2005, and thought their album “A Beautiful Lie” was pretty good. However, for whatever reason, they didn’t really hit the big stage back then. Somehow, with some marketing magic, a bunch of their singles just remade their way to the charts.
Have a look at the video below for “The Kill”. Somehow, Jared Leto doesn’t really get a sore throat from all that screaming.
And below, the same song in acoustic. I think it sounds pretty neat!
And finally, a live version:
Putting aside the bewildered look of the mums and dads sitting down in front, it just does not have the same amount of intensity as the original. I suppose if Jared had to keep it at the same level of screaming in every live performance, he might not have a voice to begin with.
Not saying he’s a bad singer, on the contrary, I really think he’s pretty amazing (just have a look at the acoustic version!). Its just that there are so many bands out there who seem extremely intense when you hear their album, but just don’t pull it off on the live stage.
Youtube’s got some live gigs of theirs and they’re not really as intense as the albums. Having said that, I’d still not pass up tickets to see them live!
